İTÜ Breaks World Record at ABET

Istanbul Technical University became the first and only university in the world to be accredited for 25 engineering programs by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in the United States.
Istanbul Technical University became the first and only university in the world to be accredited for 25 engineering programs by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in the United States.

As the first and only university accredited by the Engineering and Technology Programs Accreditation Board (ABET) in the United States for 25 engineering programs, our university has once again proven its success on an international scale.

Our university first applied to ABET in 2002 to assess its quality of education, going on to surpass the world’s distinguished universities since then. Our university received an equivalency from ABET with 16 programs in 2004/2005 and by 2011 had received "full accreditation" with 23 engineering programs. During the last evaluation, it became the first and only university in the world with 25 accredited engineering programs.

A Diploma from ITU diploma is valid all over the world

ABET accreditation means that the quality of our university's education is internationally accepted and its diplomas are valid all over the world. This way, our students are also eligible to take the American "Qualifying Engineering" examination.

This accreditation, which ensures that the diplomas of ITU engineers are valid in the USA, Europe and all over the world, demonstrates the equivalency of the quality of education. Universities that receive ABET accreditation produce high-quality graduates who contribute to global workforce. ABET conducts the accreditation of 3,700 programs of 750 universities in 30 different countries. With this accreditation, the diploma for 25 of our university’s programs will be accepted all over the world.

Our Rector, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca: “We will continue to improve our quality”

With the departure of ABET officials from our university, our academics gathered at the Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center Senate Hall to wait for the results to be revealed with curiosity. Our Vice Rectors, Prof. Dr. Telem Gök Sadıkoğlu, and Prof. Dr. Ali Fuat Aydın, ITU Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Taptık, and ABET Coordinator, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ebru Dülekgürgen were present at the meeting.

Following the announcement of the results, our Rector, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca addressed the academics on ITU's quality education breaking a world record, stating "ITU, once again proved its success on an international scale as the first and only university to receive American "ABET" (Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology Programs), accreditation for 25 engineering programs.”

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca, thanked everyone in the ITU family for their efforts, stating:
"With ABET accreditation, the quality of our university's education has once again been confirmed by an independent international organization. We are the first and only university in the world to be fully accredited for 25 engineering programs. ITU is an exemplary university with its technical infrastructure, laboratories, curriculum, and social and cultural opportunities. The ABET Committee visited our departments one by one to examine, on-site, our education quality, laboratory infrastructure, and the opportunities we offer our students.

The committee was very impressed with our engineering education, which we have progressed with work in "innovation" and "entrepreneurship". They we’re amazed at our entrepreneurship ecosystem, which supports our students with their original ideas to take steps toward entrepreneurship while still in their undergraduate years through ITU Ginova, ITU ARI Teknokent, ITU Seed, ITUNOVA TTO and ITU Gate programs. They were also very impressed by the details of the Academic Counseling program that started this year.

The committee was informed that, through the Academic Counseling program, students could get support and exchange ideas with teaching staff in order to shape their academic education as well as plan their career journeys. As ITU, we will continue our work and continue to train engineers who will shape the world." Rector Karaca ended his speech by thanking the ABET committee for their intense work.
